Farce over 'Wrong' Bus Stop

11.27.57am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 30th Jun 2003

After months of wrangling between local residents, backed by MP Vincent Cable, over the siting of a bus stop on Uxbridge Road, London Buses have justified the location, sending Vincent Cable photographs to demonstrate how well it fits in with the environment - unfortunately the pictures are of a different bus stop!

Vincent Cable was scathing about the "incompetence" of both London Buses and the council who failed to consult residents about the site; went ahead despite protests; and - it now appears - imagined that they were dealing with a different bus stop.

Vincent Cable said: "the siting of bus stops is often very controversial and the bus authorities have the power to over-ride local objections and put them where they want. But there is an obligation to consult and there should be a basic competence. On this occasion the council was consulted but not the residents".
