MP Claims Government U Turn on Telecoms Masts

Following a question by Vincent Cable, MP to the Deputy Prime Minister on Wednesday, a government minister (Yvette Cooper) has confirmed in parliament that the government will review its planning guidance in relation to telecoms masts. At present, there is a confusing position where health considerations cannot be a ground for a council rejecting a mast but 'public perceptions' of health risk can be. Several masts have been rejected on 'pubic perception' grounds, like the Whitton mast overlooking St Edmunds school. Appeals and courts have thrown up some conflicting verdicts, adding to the confusion.

"I was very surprised, but pleased, to hear in response to my question, that the government is rethinking its policy. Many people have genuine anxieties about masts; the scientific evidence, while generally reassuring, is inconclusive; and there are particular worries about the vulnerability of children in schools exposed to the full intensity of the beams. What could emerge from the government U-turn is the acceptance of a more selective approach, with greater protection for schools. This will be helpful in dealing with new applications near St Edmunds, the controversial Hampton mast at Hampton Juniors and other unpopular proposals, as in Hampton Wick".
