New Night Buses

3.54.07pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 22nd Aug 2005

The Twickenham area is to get two new night buses: the 281 will run form Hounslow to Kingston via Twickenham every 30 minutes, every night through the week. Another service (N22) will be re-routed to run from Piccadilly, Putney and Richmond to Twickenham and Fulwell. London Buses are consulting on the proposals which would come into effect next year.

MP Vincent Cable and Councillor Denise Carr, who have campaigned for the new 281 night services, expressed pleasure that there had been a step forward: "Twickenham - and increasingly Teddington - have become centres for night life yet there is no public transport to evacuate people in the early hours so they often hang around the town centres making a nuisance of themselves. If the proposals go ahead, there will now be a regular bus service to take people back home late at night".

"There are also growing numbers of people employed in the 'night time' economy in the public and private sector and it is important that they can get home or to work".
