Crackdown on Firework Misuse3.38.41pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 31st Oct 2005 This year the police are armed with greater powers to crackdown on those misusing fireworks. Three new offences have been created - breach of fireworks curfew (11pm-7am except for 5th November (00.00-07.00) and 31st December (01.00-07.00)); possession of an 'adult' firework in a public place by anyone under 18; and possession of a powerful 'Category 4' firework. Offenders face a £80 fine. The police also have powers to stop and search anyone suspected of carrying fireworks illegally. Vincent Cable MP said: "Fireworks season is approaching and from past experience this involves a great deal more disruption than the traditional family bonfire on November 5th. There will be loud bangers going off for weeks before and after Bonfire Night, often simply designed to frighten people and animals. "I was a supporter for the Fireworks Act 2003 when it passed through Parliament and I trust that the police will use its powers if fireworks are misused."
